The Markets on Flu

The news is flooded with worries about a new strain of flu from Mexico and you can follow its spread via a keen Google Maps application.

At the moment, the new flu doesn't appear to be as bad as the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic which is estimated to have killed roughly 50 million to 100 million people. I sure hope that we don't see something similar this time around. Fortunately, the early indications are that we won't.

While the Spanish flu killed millions, it didn't seem to impact the stock markets much. Mind you, World War 1 was also winding down at the time and it's hard to separate these two major events. But take a look for yourself.
